It’s Not Easy Being Green: Commission on the Status of Women (CSW)

APPROXIMATE COMMITTEE SIZE: 30-40 delegates

NOTE: This is a single-delegate committee.

topic: Addressing the Climate Crisis as an Issue of Gender Equality

Discussion of the climate crisis is not complete without a discussion of how it disproportionately affects women. According to the United Nations, eighty percent of people displaced by the climate crisis are women. This is particularly exacerbated during natural disasters such as floods — because of outdated cultural norms, women often stay at home as caretakers, forced to choose between protecting themselves or their dependents. On the other side of that same coin, women find themselves unrepresented in the very leadership roles that make the decisions about how to address the climate crisis, practically ensuring that solutions will not address gender inequality. Therefore, this committee will bring the discussion of climate change into a body that specifically focuses on issues of gender inequality. We are looking forward to seeing your creative solutions to this intersectional global challenge!

CHAIR: Julie Johnson

ABOUT THE CHAIR

Julie Johnson is a member of the Class of 2025 in the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, majoring in International Politics. Hailing from NYC (the city with the best pizza and bagels!), Julie has been involved in MUN since the 7th grade where she first competed at her local Model UN conference. As a first-year at Georgetown, she served as Director of Outreach for DistrictMUN, where she continued her passion for making Model UN accessible locally and for young students. This past year she had the honor of serving as DistrictMUN IV’s Secretary-General and she currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Georgetown International Relations Association. Outside of MUN, Julie is a company member of Georgetown’s contemporary-modern dance company (Black Movements Dance Theatre) and enjoys spending time outside on Georgetown’s campus, color-coordinated spreadsheets, and Trader Joe’s runs. Julie is thrilled to welcome delegates back for DistrictMUN V.

CHAIR: Eilat Herman

ABOUT THE CHAIR

Eilat Herman is in Georgetown College of Arts and Sciences’ class of 2026, majoring in Government and minoring in Linguistics. Eilat has competed in and staffed Model UN since high school, and served as Director of Business for DistrictMUN III and a chair during last year’s conference. Eilat is from Montclair, New Jersey, a state that has significantly better pizza and bagels than New York ― sorry, Julie! Outside of Model UN, Eilat is on Georgetown’s Moot Court team and writes a column for Georgetown’s school newspaper, The Hoya. In her free time, you can likely find her yapping, watching baseball, grabbing ice cream, or all three at once. Eilat is extremely proud that she managed to fit a Kermit the Frog reference into this committee title, and is looking forward to chairing CSW this year!
